John Caudwell Breaks His Silence for Everyman

23 May 2006

Leading businessman, John Caudwell, has decided to break his silence about his past experience of suffering testicular cancer to help support Everyman, the male cancer campaign, in order to get the message out to more men that regular checking can save lives.

Men are still notoriously bad at looking after their health and awareness of testicular cancer remains low.  As a former sufferer of testicular cancer, John Caudwell, owner of Phones 4U and Chairman and Chief Executive of The Caudwell Group, has agreed to speak for the first time about his experience with the disease. Ten years ago John suffered from testicular cancer but it did not stop him from being one of the most successful businessmen in the UK.

Mr Caudwell said, “I was quite shocked when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer but it certainly wasn’t going to stop me from achieving what I wanted to achieve and in fact it spurred me on to be even more successful.”

There is a 99% cure rate if it’s caught early enough so awareness of this disease is vital.  As John says: “If my talking about the importance of checking for testicular cancer makes one more man take action then I’ll feel it’s been worthwhile.”

“Men seem to want to ignore the fact that testicular cancer even exists as it is still a taboo subject.  This seems ridiculous to me as there is such a high cure rate if it’s caught early enough and just ignoring it could lead to the cancer spreading which makes treatment far more difficult.”

Alison Morgan from the Everyman Campaign said, “We are delighted that John Caudwell has come forward to talk about his own experiences.  He has proved that testicular cancer doesn’t have to stop you from achieving huge success and living a normal life.  We hope that his story will encourage more men to start taking note of the symptoms of this cancer.”

The Everyman Campaign encourages men to check their testicles regularly so that they can spot early on if there’s anything out of the ordinary.  If any man does feel a lump or notices a swelling, or tenderness they should get themselves to their GP as early as possible.

The Everyman Campaign is run by The Institute of Cancer Research to raise awareness of and funds for testicular and prostate cancer.   June is Everyman male cancer awareness month when there is a focus of activity around raising awareness of these cancers.
