RADICALS trial

Phase III trial of radiotherapy and hormone therapy after surgery (RADICALS)

Current treatment for aggressive prostate cancer involves a radical prostatectomy, in which the prostate glad is removed to try and eradicate the cancer.

Additional treatment such as radiotherapy or hormone treatment is used if the cancer comes back after surgery. An alternative approach would be to use additional radiotherapy or hormone therapy routinely in all man after surgery in the hope that it would prevent the cancer from returning. This approach has not yet been properly tested. All treatments have side-effects so it is important to understand if there is a benefit before an additional treatment becomes standard.

This study, led by the ICR’s Everyman scientist Dr Chris Parker, will investigate whether having routine radiotherapy and hormone therapy after surgery improves the outcome for men with early stage, aggressive prostate cancer.

Recruitment is open until May 2013 and more than 50 hospitals across the UK are involved in the trial.
