Famous Dad And Daughter Say: Make Father's Day

09 June 2008

Glamorous Gladiators presenter, Kirsty Gallacher and her dad, golfer Bernard Gallacher, got together this week to spread the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign’s message to Make Father’s Day this Sunday (15 June).

The famous pair are urging sons and daughters to show dad they care on Father’s Day by donating to Everyman’s vital research into prostate and testicular cancer.

Kirsty said: “One man dies from prostate cancer every hour in the UK. And they’re men like my dad – fit and active middle aged guys. The best present I can give dad this Father’s Day is donating towards Everyman’s research into a disease which affects thousands like him.”

The fun photo was taken in time not just for Father’s Day, but also to mark this June as Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month.

Krista Eleftheriou, spokesperson for Everyman said: “It’s brilliant that Kirsty and Bernard are willing to stand up and talk about prostate cancer and the thousands of men diagnosed every year. I’m sure that many will relate to the close relationship that they have and think about their own dad this Father’s Day. Make Father’s Day; forget the card, donate to save lives instead.”

Around 35,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and approximately 10,000 die from the disease every year in the UK.

The Everyman Centre is Europe’s first and only dedicated male cancer research centre. Everyman scientists are working on an extensive programme of research into prostate and testicular cancer.

The centre has been responsible for some remarkable achievements, such as the development of a testicular cancer drug, Carboplatin, which has been largely responsible for more than 90 per cent of men surviving the disease. Everyman scientists also discovered the E2F3 gene, which helped to provide a marker to distinguish between aggressive and non-aggressive prostate cancers.

Notes to Editor:

• Everyman is a campaign run by The Institute of Cancer Research, to raise awareness and fund research into testicular and prostate cancer at The Everyman Centre – Europe’s first and only centre dedicated to male cancer research.

• The Institute of Cancer Research is Europe’s leading cancer research centre with expert scientists working on cutting edge research. It was founded in 1909 to carry out research into the causes of cancer and to develop new strategies for its prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care. Website at: www.icr.ac.uk

• Prostate cancer has overtaken lung cancer to become the most common cancer in men affecting almost 35,000 men every year in the UK. One man dies of prostate cancer in the UK every hour.

• Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men aged between 15 and 44, with about 2,000 cases a year in the UK. Incidence is increasing dramatically – by almost 4-fold in the last 50 years, but thanks to advances made at Everyman, testicular cancer is 99 per cent curable if caught early, and with treatment the overall cure rate is 95 per cent.
